8/24/2023 0 Comments Ia writer code syntax highlightingThe standard OS X spell checker will let you know when you’re misspelling words, but for the most part you’re getting a very simple and easy to use way to capture text. TextEdit, being free and almost universally compatible, is a wonderful way to simply type a lot of text. Chances are if you download an app installer from a website, it will include a “ReadMe.txt” file with instructions or license information. txt format, as they’re universally readable - every device has some way to view and in many cases edit. Many documents that you can download from the Web are in. Those documents have no formatting, there’s no ruler, no fancy formatting. When it’s used strictly to just write text, TextEdit can save documents in. TextEdit, editing a Rich Text Format (RTF) file. When it’s used in that way, TextEdit saves files as RTF (Rich Text Format). There’s the common “ruler” at the top of the TextEdit window, and tabs can be added for aligning text. Oddly enough, it can be used as a kind of “mini word processor” as it includes the ability to use different typefaces, sizes and styles, can justify text (align it with margins), even create numbered or bulleted outlines. Probably the most unsung app included with OS X is TextEdit. Don’t need the different header styles, footnotes, and tables of contents? Then a text editor might be the better choice. If you’re looking for something that can create beautifully formatted text or include images and tables, then a word processor like Pages or Microsoft Word is going to do the job for you. The best way to delineate the difference between a text editor and a word processor is the level of formatting that the program can apply to text. For programmers and web developers, text editors evolved with the ability to highlight certain types of code in different colors to ensure that everything was properly formatted - in other words, that brackets were closed, that a certain code had a corresponding “close” code, etc. Of course, this meant that the programs became more difficult to use, and I personally recall some word processing applications from the late 1980s that were incredibly complex with a long learning curve.īut for many people, text editors were and are the easiest way to just quickly type out text and get it into a computer readable format. By applying formatting codes to text, it was possible to do all of those things that you couldn’t do with a plaintext editor. When the first word processing programs came out, they started making things fancier. There was no way to center text, bold-face headlines, justify text to your margins - it was just text on a screen, printed on a dot-matrix printer. Originally, if you wanted to write a letter or book on a computer, you used a plaintext editor to type in your document and then print it out. Text editors have been around since the first days of the personal computer revolution. Today’s Friday Five looks at five popular OS X text editors, what they’re best used for, and why you may want to consider using them instead of traditional word processing applications like Pages or Word. Primarily used to generate plain text files with no styling or formatting, they can be used for a huge number of purposes from taking quick notes to editing websites or writing application code. Text editors are the unsung heroes of the Mac. Each week, the Friday Five takes a quick look at a Mac OS X or iOS app to point out five things you may have overlooked before. It’s the end of the week, but that doesn’t mean an end to learning more about your favorite Apple devices. 8/24/2023 0 Comments Best supergoop sunscreenMineral doesn’t necessarily mean better unless you have sensitive skin, in which case Dr. “Their Eryfotona Actinica sunscreen is dermatologically tested and non-comedogenic, meaning it is less likely to clog pores or cause breakouts.”Īnother point for the Isdin Eryfotona Actinica sunscreen is the mineral formulation. “Isdin is a reputable brand known for its rigorous testing and dermatological expertise,” he explains. Nikko recommends this face sunscreen for those worried about blemishes. If you’re worried that using sunscreen will contribute to acne, this is the product for you. So where does it fall short? If you don’t rub it in completely, there’s a faint white cast. It came in as a close second to Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen, achieving high marks for its silky smooth consistency, hydrating formula, and pleasant smell. It’s lightweight, easy to apply, and moisturizing, even for combination skin that leans dry. This sunscreen was a favorite among the dermatologists we spoke to, and after putting it to the test, we can see why. Key Specs: Active Ingredients: Avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene | SPF: 40 | Size: 1.7 fluid ounces | Formulation: GelĬan leave a faint white cast if not rubbed in all the way But if you have oily skin, this one is a winner. We found it can feel dry on the skin, and the oil-free formula might not be enough to curb breakouts. “It’s a lightweight, oil-free option with broad-spectrum SPF 40, which protects against sun damage and even filters blue light from screens,” she says.Īlthough people with all skin types are welcome to try this sunscreen, those with dry and acne-prone skin may run into some problems. Jeannette Graf, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City recommends this sunscreen for all skin types and everyday use. The sunscreen didn’t transfer to clothes, held up well during exercise, and was easy to apply and remove. We found it performed well in all areas of testing. It mattifies and feels weightless, so it’s a good choice for those who lean on the oily side. The lightweight texture lives up to the hype, per our editor with oily skin who enjoyed the velvety finish. With dimethicone as one of the main ingredients, it has a blurring effect much like a primer, so it layers flawlessly with makeup. The Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen is known for its invisible formula that doesn't leave a white cast. May not be suitable for dry or acne-prone skin So we put over 75 of the market’s leading sunscreens to the test over a two-week period in the real world. We know it's nearly impossible to tell whether a sunscreen will feel comfortable on your skin, leave the dreaded white cast, or transfer to your clothes just by reading the label. We asked board-certified dermatologists what to look for in sunscreen, and they unanimously agreed that a good sunscreen will have broad-spectrum protection and an SPF 30 or greater. Marianna Blyumin-Karasik, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist in Davie, Florida, says sunscreen is the most effective tool to protect your skin from the dangerous side effects of sun exposure. Fortunately, skin cancer is also largely preventable with consistent sun safety practices, including daily sunscreen use. UV rays can increase the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer, which is the most common form of cancer in the United States, affecting millions of Americans each year. Sunscreen shields your skin from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation, says Anthony Nikko, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Houston, Texas. Nevertheless, dermatologists agree sunscreen is something everyone should be using-and every day, at that. We get it: applying sunscreen can feel like a chore. Though most people understand its importance, many American adults don’t use sunscreen on a regular basis. To many of us, sunscreen is that bright yellow tube reserved for summer vacations and beach days. 8/24/2023 0 Comments Old movie intermissionIn India, it’s hard to find a blockbuster without one. The Alamo Drafthouse, an upscale theater due to open in the Seaport this year, will serve full meals directly to your seat. AMC this year introduced premium pricing for the best spots, a first. Theaters these days justify higher ticket costs by adding cozier and more luxurious seats, with recliner buttons and retractable footrests. Box office figures for the latest Avatar (three hours, 12 minutes) make it clear: we’re just fine buckling in for a three-hour-plus epic, so why would we balk at an extra handful of minutes? Just as directors have gotten comfortable with mega-long runtimes, so have viewers. Or parents picking the brains of their excited kids about what might happen next in The Little Mermaid (which, by the way, runs two hours and 15 minutes). First dates, instead of sitting in silence for hours, bonding over how great (or terrible!) the new Indiana Jones is so far. Think of the camaraderie we’re missing without them: Buddies gushing over the violent acrobatics in the early part of John Wick: Chapter 4 and anticipating more to come. Intermissions, as I learned that fateful night eight years ago, are a blast. Nature, after all, calls - does Hollywood really expect us to hold it for an entire evening of cinema? Would they prefer that a majority of viewers miss some significant plot detail to head to the loo? Have they considered our kidneys? Even the Fast and Furious franchise isn’t immune: Its latest installment, Fast X, runs two hours and 21 minutes. Oppenheimer clocks in at about three hours. The latest Mission: Impossible is two hours and 43 minutes long. Sadly, they are almost impossible to find these days, even when every big studio is churning out movies that run well beyond the two-hour mark. Reporter Spencer Buell has a passionate plea for Hollywood to give moviegoers a break and bring back the movie intermission. 8/24/2023 0 Comments Floalt led panelDo not try it without closing the cover since some metal parts like the heatsink can be connected to high voltages. I hope this helps some people to fix their lamps and not throwing them away.īe very careful when you work on a switched-mode power supplies like this and be sure that it is disconnected from the mains voltage when you work on it. I replaced it with a new one and the lamp works perfectly again. It is a 47 Ohm SMD-resistor in size 1206. After some research, I found resistor R6 on the bottom side of the PCB to be the problem. Since i have some experience with switched-mode power supplies, I decided to try to fix it myself instead of returning the lamp to IKEA. At this point you could simply attach the fixture to the cable easily with the in-line connector and secure the fixture to the hanging bracket. Some days ago I had the same problem as described here and here Then you could install the mounting frame for the light to the electrical box and then use the 10 drywall screws (not included!) to secure it to the celling. This would allow you to wire the cable into the electrical box in the ceiling with it disconnected from the fixture. With a dimmable LED light panel you can adapt your lighting to different activities, like a warmer light for dinner and a brighter, colder. Using a paper clip, hold down the reset button on the driver. For the driver to enter pairing mode, it must be factory reseted. What I'd suggest be changed with this fixture would be to have an in-line connector on the electrical cable attached to the light. In deCONZ, pull out the left menu with the hamburger icon in the top left, then go to Lights, and Add new lights. As stated in the supplied directions, Ikea intends for you to have four hands to wire up this fixture! Not the easiest thing to have two people on ladders to install this light. Det praktiske LED-panel giver dig mulighed for at tilpasse belysningen til forskellige situationer. But right after that the ikea remote control stopped working. From then on i can control the floalt light within HA. I paired the Floalt with the zigbee2mqtt by controlling the master switch 5 to 6 times on-off, and HA find the device. What I don't like about the FLOALT LED light panel is the way it's designed with regards to the installation of the fixture. Hello All, I’ve got an Ikea floalt with an ikea remote control to control it. I do like that the FLOALT doesn’t require a TRÅDFRI gateway to function, only a TRÅDFRI remote if you choose not to purchase a gateway where as the Philips fixture need their gateway. I like the Philips Being fixture for its design and the greater colour temperature range 2200 - 6500 Kelvin compared to the FLOALT at 2200 - 4000 Kelvin. This should give the students an idea where they need to spend time and me an idea what to review and re-teach. The default grading bands for Actively Learn assignments are Advanced (100-91), Proficient (90-71), Developing (70-51), Incomplete (50-1), and Zero (0). In a nod to Dan’s method of assessment, I’ll be entering each score into the gradebook separately so that we can see development on each area of the rubric across the school year. But since MLA format is a requirement of the writing, the Final score is the percentage earned on the assignment. It’s my actual assessment of their writing skill, something into which the ability to format a paper doesn’t/shouldn’t factor. On the scoresheet I’ll print out ( see image above), the Writing Percentage is the grade on the paper without the score for MLA format figured in. Anything that gets me moving to the next one faster, while still giving time to the current one, is a good thing. But all that is probably faster than the bog of adding numbers with a calculator and entering scores onto each paper. I keep this all electronic, which means printing out somewhere near ten pages and making good friends with the paper cutter and stapler each essay. Matching up the best description of the writing to the score on the rubric, I enter scores and let Excel do the math. I figured out how to manage that (in this case, N2 is the cell with the rubric score): Five out of six equals 83%, close to, but not quite, the grade of B I have in mind. Four out of six equals 67%, not quite the grade of C I have in mind. I cranked out some numbers and figured out the computations for my scale: Thesis/OrganizationĪ six-point rubric works like this (at least, it does to me): In My Head:Īs the rubric score drops, a certain number must be added to the sum in order to keep to the percentages. Since I know what each row on the rubric should be worth in the final score, it’s about dividing the score I want each row to be worth into six. Some rows of the rubric are more important than others. If you’re curious how I worked this out, read on, my friend. Take a look at them both and get back to me with any questions or comments. If you want to skip the discussion of how I got here, I understand. This time, I’ve set Excel in place to keep my evaluations constant. I have this problem every year, with varying and inconsistent solutions. Lack of awareness of this or any other JIBC policy does not excuse a student from responsibility for their actions. How can I take the scores from my assessment on a six-point rubric and turn them into a percentage? 3, 3, 4, 4: that doesn’t convert very well to a score out of one hundred. Rabindranath Tagore had become the first non-European to receive this honour, which catapulted him to literary stardom. The Nobel Committee had selected Song Offerings for its “deep and rare spiritual beauty”. Not long after, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. In September, Tagore decided to sail back home. The precision and clarity of his poetry had struck a chord with both critics and general readers, and one reviewer went as far as to describe his poems as “an achievement unequalled in the English language since the appearance of the King James Bible”! The reviews of Song Offerings were glowing. In April 1913, Tagore returned to England and found himself in a social whirl that revolved around him and his now-famous works. The most notable of these lectures was at Harvard, where he found the audience most receptive to his talks on spirituality and Indian philosophy. During the next four months, he covered half the country, delivering lectures in American universities. Tagore giving interview to Columbia Radio | oldindianphotos.inįrom Illinois, Tagore travelled to Chicago on the warm invitation of Harriet Monroe, editor of Poetry magazine. C F Andrews even wrote that “the experience was not unlike that of Keats’s when he came for the first time for Chapman’s translation of Homer”. A private reading session at Rothenstein’s Hampstead home was attended by London’s literary luminaries like Ezra Pound, Ernest Rhys, Charles Trevelyan and C F Andrews, who were overwhelmed by the poetry of a ‘new order’. Yeats was equally struck by the depth and power of the slender volume. Rothenstein showed Tagore’s works to W B Yeats, the English poet who would later win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. This is also what the English poets had called the poetry of a ‘new order’, which was a decisive break from the past. Gitanjali is in the tradition of devotional poetry, but its spontaneous abundance had lent it a fresh and original treatment, and most importantly a mystic beauty that had struck the poets in England. When Rothenstein inquired about Tagore’s work, the poet reluctantly handed over his translated verses. Soon after he reached London, he contacted William Rothenstein, a distinguished painter and writer on art, whom he had met at his ancestral home in Calcutta in 1910. The personal losses Tagore had suffered over the past years, and the intense involvement in the school that he was establishing at Shantiniketan had an effect on his health and he was advised a European vacation by his doctors.ĭuring the month-long voyage to England, Tagore spent his time in contemplation and he also translated a volume of his poems he was carrying with him, from Bengali to English. Tagore with Rothenstein | Wikimedia Commons He was a diehard patriot but abhorred militancy, and the aggressive turn the Indian freedom struggle was taking had left him growing increasingly disenchanted. He had lost his wife, his father and two of his children in a span of just five years, and his robust involvement in the political movement during the partition of Bengal in 1905 was ebbing. In 1912, Tagore was 51 and the early years of the new century had not been kind to him. Ten years later, in 1890, he was in England again, as part of a whistle-stop European tour. Always a non-conformist where education was concerned, Tagore returned home two years later, his course unfinished, for reasons unknown. He had headed there in his teens, after enrolling for a law degree at University College London. It was his third visit to England, a country he had first visited when he was just 17 years old. It was the summer of 1912 when Rabindranath Tagore arrived in London to kick it all off. Somewhere along the way, he also became the first non-European to win a Nobel Prize. While on his travels, he amazed, he inspired, he provoked debate and even courted controversy. In a series of tours spread over 20 years, Tagore – the poet, writer, humanist and abiding pride of Bengal - visited 34 countries either as a state guest or on hosted public-speaking engagements. That is perhaps why it is important to consider Rabindranath Tagore’s travels. These are things only a genius can do, but even he can only do them given the right mix of circumstances. He would make notes in the margins of W B Yeats’s poetry, then hand the pages back to him for consideration agree to attend a soiree and then hold spellbound writers of the likes of Ezra Pound. I'm on Windows 11, and I am on the Insider Dev Channel, which could potentially be what's causing the issue, but I haven't seen any other reports of this issue in the Feedback app or anywhere else online. I feel like I have no troubleshooting options left aside from reinstalling Windows, which I really don't want to do since I just went through that a few months ago and I'm only just now feeling like I've fully settled back in with all my random software and tools that I like having installed. I've tried installing it as a clean installation and not, which makes no difference. I am using DDU every time to fully uninstall the driver before reinstalling it. I've tried quite a few troubleshooting steps at this point, including installing multiple older drivers from a few months ago (a time period when I know NVCP was working), stopping and restarting services, etc. If I look in Task Manager, I can see that the Nvidia Control Panel process very briefly blips up and then disappears again.Īlso, whenever I try to reinstall the driver, after it's complete, when I first try to open NVCP, it does show the software license agreement window where you have to click Agree, but after clicking Agree, that window goes away and the NVCP never comes up. I have an GeForce 940mx, and the driver (which I have reinstalled multiple times at this point) works just fine, as normal, in every way except that NVCP will not open. This has been an issue for maybe a week, I'm not exactly sure how long, since I don't open NVCP all that often. Press the indicated key to Save the settings and exit the BIOS/UEFI settings screen (usually the F10 key).To preface this, I'm entirely unsure if this is an issue with Windows Insider Dev builds specifically, or if there's something else wrong that I haven't been able to find on my own.If it’s enabled, scroll down to it using the ↑ ↓ keys and press Enter to set it. Make sure that the “Secure Boot” option is disabled. At the BIOS/UEFI settings screen, navigate to the “Boot” or “Security” tab using the ← → keys.If you are unsure which key to press, it is usually either Esc, Delete, F2, F12, or another function key. This key should be indicated on the screen at start-up or in your computer’s manual. Immediately upon start-up, repeatedly press the designated key to open the BIOS/UEFI settings.Power off your computer and power it on again.Your computer’s Secure Boot feature might be blocking the system from loading the NVIDIA drivers. If the NVIDIA graphics drivers are still not activated Check if “NVIDIA” is mentioned in the “Graphics” list item.Navigate to the “About” panel, which should be at the bottom of the left sidebar menu. You can verify that the drivers are installed and working correctly by following these steps: Verify whether the NVIDIA drivers are activated The NVIDIA drivers should now be installed and activated. After the installation completes, restart your computer to apply the changes. This will start downloading and installing the NVIDIA proprietary drivers. Select the radio button beside the newest or recommended version of the “NVIDIA driver”. After a moment, you should see a list of graphics drivers available for your computer.Navigate to the “Additional Drivers” tab. After the Software Updater has finished checking for updates, click on “Settings…”.Open the Zorin Menu → System Tools → Software Updater. Make sure that your computer is connected to the Internet. If you’ve already installed Zorin OS to your computer without selecting to use the modern NVIDIA drivers as in the above instructions, you will need to install the correct version of the NVIDIA drivers using the built-in “Additional Drivers” app. You'll be able to activate the NVIDIA drivers after installing Zorin OS by following the instructions below instead. If your computer has an older NVIDIA graphics card, please select the "Try or install Zorin OS" option ( without modern NVIDIA drivers). This uses the NVIDIA version 535 proprietary drivers, which only work with newer NVIDIA graphics cards (produced after 2013). |
